Dr. Sanstead has served North Dakota in elective offices for 29 years; eight years as State Representative, two years as State Senator, and eight years as Lieutenant Governor. As State Superintendent of Public Instruction, he is one of the nation's senior State School Chiefs and serves as chairman of their Legislative Committee.

Dr. Sanstead received his bachelor of arts degree in Speech and Political Science from St. Olaf College, Northfield, MN. His master's degree in Public Address and Group Communications is from Northwestern University, and his doctorate is in Secondary Education from the University of North Dakota.

During his academic career, Dr. Sanstead was named a James J. Hill Foundation Scholar, Eagleton Scholar, and a Coe Family Foundation Scholar. He is listed in Who's Who in American Politics and Who's Who in American Education.

Dr. Sanstead has been recognized with numerous awards, among them being:

  • St. Olaf College Distinguished Alumnus Award (1991)
  • National Forensic League Communicator of the Year (1992)
  • International Reading Association Literacy Award (1993)
  • American School Counselor Association Advocate of the Year (1994)

Most recently, Dr. Sanstead was selected as the recipient of the National Federal outstanding Speech Educator Award.

Dr. Sanstead, and his wife, Mary Jane, have two sons, Tim and John.
