Recreational Uses of School Trust Lands
School trust lands were given to the State at statehood solely for the financial support of schools and institutions.
The mechanism provided by the state constitution to produce income is primarily through leasing for grazing.
Although school trust lands are not multiple use lands, in most cases they are open for non-vehicular access for
recreational purposes which do not conflict with grazing. Activities such as hiking, birdwatching, fishing, hunting
and berry picking for personal consumption are appropriate uses. Camping, dog training, metal detecting and fossil
collecting or removing artifacts are not allowed. If in doubt about a proposed activity, please call Jerry at 328-2800.
